Prof. Pradyumna Vyas

Prof. Pradyumna Vyas is a former Director of National Institute of Design (NID), India’s premier design institute. He is currently the senior Advisor for Design Promotion and Innovation at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and President-elect of the World Design Organisation (WDO).

Prof. Vyas acquired Masters in Industrial Design (M Des.) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and was awarded an Honorary Master of Arts degree from the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, United Kingdom in 2010.

With more than 38 years of professional and teaching experience in different spheres of design, Prof. Vyas was associated with NID for 30 years, first as a faculty member and later as the Director of the Institute from 2009-2019.

Prof. Vyas has been at the helm of design affairs in India and globally, and his illustrious career has been marked with several national and international milestones and accolades.

His contribution in the formation the India Design Council (IDC)in 2009, under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India was marked by Prof. Vyas being nominated as its first Member Secretary, a post he retained until his retirement from NID in 2019. Through IDC, he launched the India Design Mark, I-Mark in association with the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), Japan on the lines of the G-Mark award.

During his tenure as Director, NID received the status of Institute of National Importance by the Act of Parliament. Prof. Vyas assisted the Government of India in setting up four new NIDs across the length and breadth of the country.

Prof. Vyas has been conferred with multiple awards in recognition for his contribution to design education and promotion, to name a few - World Education Congress 2015, awarded him for his Outstanding Contribution to Education; he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Times Education Icons 2017; and he was nominated as a jury member for the Good Design Award (G-Mark) Japan by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion consecutively in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

In 2019, the honour of Good Design Fellow of Japan was bestowed upon Prof. Vyas, by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) in Tokyo. Prof Vyas has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, China.

Prof. Vyas is a jury member of the German Design Award 2024, Germany, the Design Intelligence Award 2024, China, the Taiwan International Students Design Competition 2024, Taiwan, and the Golden Pin Design Award 2024, Taiwan .

He has also been chairing the jury of the Design Excellence Award organised by Business World one of the leading business magazines of India.

Appointed as a member of the Academic Committee of the World Eco- Design Conference (UN Consultative status NGO) in 2024
