Prof. Ranendra N. Biswas received the degree of B. Sc. (Hons.) in Physics in 1957, and the degree of M. Sc. (Tech) in Electronics in 1960, both from the University of Calcutta. He did his Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1967, and joined IIT Kanpur, where he served as a Professor of Electrical Engineering. During 1993-99, he was the Director of CEERI Pilani, a CSIR laboratory, on deputation from IIT Kanpur. After retiring from IIT Kanpur in 1999, he was associated with several institutes in various roles, including: Director, Usha Martin Academy, IIT Madras (1999-2002), Distinguished Professor, DA-IICT, Gandhinagar, Gujarat (2002-07), Visiting Professor, IIIT Hyderabad (2007-09). IIT Kanpur conferred on him the Distinguished Teacher award in 2007, and the Institute Fellow award in 2015.
